Coming back off of a one year hiatus, the Stepinac junior varsity hockey team has shot out of the gate with a 3-1 start to the season in league play.

Opening the season, the Crusaders skated with local rival Fordham Prep, coming away with a convincing 4-1 victory. Goaltender Ray Guerriero played stellar in net, and the Crusaders patience on the power play paid off, leading to the victory.

In the second game of the season, the Crusaders were matched up with defending league champion St. Anthonys High School from Huntington. After falling behind 3-1, the Crusaders were able to rally back to tie the game at 3-3 with 10 minutes remaining in the third period. However, the Friars were able to score 2 late goals and defeat Stepinac by a final of 5-3. The boys played with an extreme amount of heart, and proved that it could match up with any team in the CHSHL.

The Crusaders 3rd and 4th games came 2 days apart against a gritty St. Joe's by the Sea team from Staten Island. Spreading the wealth on the scoresheet, along with continued stellar play by netminder Guerreiro, the Crusaders were able to pull out victories of 2-1 and 6-4 against the Vikings. Goals were scored by sophomores Wyatt Zuk and Sebastian Lopez, along with freshman Rob Sanders, Steve Michelle and Kyle Mahoney.

The Crusaders continue league play this weekend with games against Chaminade and Farrell.
