White Plains 3-1 over Stepinac in WP Hockey tourney

White Plains 3, Stepinac 1

A couple of thoughts …

It really wasn’t that close. White Plains was in control every second of the contest, but had some issues solving Stepinac goalie Michael Lanero, who came up with 30 saves. There were three or four silly stops in the bunch. The Tigers have put 79 shots on net in two games, but only have six goals.

Still, they do not let up.

“Our goal this year is not to have that roller coaster ride we had last year,” White Plains forward Paul Variano said. “Our goal is to be a consistent team. We really don’t want to be that team in sectionals that is know for pulling off upsets. We are working to be that team in sectionals that is expected to win.”

The Tigers are strong defensively with Jack Peeples and Connor Lawrence in front of Chris Stangarone, an eighth-grade keeper who’s proving to be quite imaginative. I really like the first line with Broderick and Variano on either side of Drew Sobo. There’s some nice depth behind that group, too.

White Plains is perfectly built to play dump and chase.

I’m not sure who is going to score for the Crusaders, who are hoping to win ugly. Dan Reagan, a top defenseman, wasn’t on the ice tonight, but even with another threat, I can see them leaning hard on Lanero.

“We’re more of a blue-collar team now,” Stepinac coach Matthew Hogan said. “We don’t have the luxury of a finesse player or a finisher like in the past.”

The schedule at Ebersole for tomorrow is, Burke and Newburgh at 9 a.m., Somers/North Salem and Sleepy Hollow/Irvington at 4:15 p.m., Clarkstown and Stepinac at 6:15 p.m., White Plains and Monroe-Woodbury at 8:15 p.m.
