Stephen Imbasciani and Joseph Gambardella scored and freshman goalie Ian McBride made 25 saves to help lift Monsignor Farrell to a 2-1 win over Archbishop Stepinac and a two-game sweep in the CHSHL Class A best-of-three championship series Sunday night at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon.

The top-seeded Lions won their 10th city championship and first since the 2001-02 season. They will now travel to Buffalo to play in the New York State CHSAA A Division Hockey Championship on March 8.

The defensive affair was in stark contrast to a wild Game 1, which was clinched by Michael Singer’s overtime goal, lifting Farrell to a 6-5 victory over Stepinac Saturday night at Abe Stark Rink in Coney Island.

Singer’s heroics helped bail top-seeded Farrell out after the Lions blew a four-goal lead in an explosive opening three minutes of the first period. James Pizzo and R.J. Flood gave Farrell (12-6-1) a 2-0 lead 59 seconds into the game and David DeFranco and Singer followed to give the Lions a four-goal lead before second-seeded Stepinac even registered a shot on goal.

The first period scoring, though, was far from over. Steven Yankowski scored twice inside of two minutes and Ryan Rueda knocked in a rebound as Stepinac (10-8-1) cut its deficit to 4-3 after a wild opening 15 minutes.
Nick Thorgensen scored on a rebound of a Joe Gambardella shot for a shorthanded goal early in the second period for the Lions, who swept Iona Prep in the semifinals, but Yankowski competed the hat trick and Shaun Hanlon tied the game at 5 with 52 seconds left in the second period for the Crusaders, who swept Chaminade in its semifinal series.

After a scoreless third period, Singer ended the game with his dramatic wrist shot in overtime.
