Stepinac goes for first title

The CHSHL finals start tonight when Stepinac travels to Coney Island to face Farrell. The Lions beat Stepinac all three times this season, though the teams tied for the regular-season title and both swept their first-round opponents.

I know a lot’s been made of Stepinac’s short bench, but the team uses four solid defensemen (more than teams like Suffern and White Plains use) and two good lines, plus obviously a star finisher in Rocco Miano, and even a goalie who’s made some important saves in the playoffs. In other words, all the parts are there. And now that there’s going to be an ice cut in the final series, that should help them even more. And there’s the fact that they have never won the league title and this could be their best chance for a while, and they have the memories from being so close last year to motivate them ever further. But even with all that, you still have to consider Farrell the favorite based on the regular-season results. I’m thinking Farrell in 3.
