Hockey power rankings and notes: Mamaroneck looking better and better

Suffern and Clarkstown North have been atop the rankings this whole season, but each stumbled in the last few days.

The Mounties lost their first regular-season game to a Section 1 team in 25 months, falling 1-0 to Pelham Tuesday night. Then on Wednesday, North Rockland tied the previously untouchable Rams 2-2.

Sure it plays a defensive system, but Suffern has had trouble scoring lately. Conversely, Clarkstown North has struggled on the defensive end, though the team has been more focused recently.

Meanwhile, the defending Division I champion, Mamaroneck, is looking better every week.

1. Mamaroneck (12-2-1): The Tigers seem to have the best mix of goaltending, defense, offense, special teams and depth. They host Pelham tomorrow night at Hommocks.

2. Suffern (11-2-1): The Mounties stay ahead of the Rams for now. Sure the Rams beat Pelham, but so did Suffern the first time. And Suffern beat North Rockland 5-0.

3. Clarkstown North (13-0-1): Despite a League 2 schedule, the Rams do have some quality wins, including Pelham, Stepinac, Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville and Scarsdale, which has since gone on a six-game win streak.

4. Pelham (11-5): No matter what happens tomorrow, it will get through a brutal schedule (Rye, Clarkstown North, Suffern, Mamaroneck) still on pace for the No. 1 seed in the Division II playoffs.

5. Stepinac (10-8): The Crusaders are in first place in the CHSHL with a 7-4 record, one point ahead of Iona Prep (6-5-1) and Farrell (6-4-1), with four games to play.
